MORE than a year after her passing, film director Yasmin Ahmad continues to create history, winning the best director award at the 54th Asia-Pacific Film Festival (APFF) here. Yasmin won the award for her last movie, Muallaf, the first Malaysian to win the award. Malaysian Film Producers' Association president Ahmad Puad Onah accepted the award at the ceremony held in the Dr Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
"Muallaf was the last movie Yasmin directed. I am sure, if she was still around, she would be so proud and would thank the festival committee for the accolade," Puad said. Muallaf, which featured Sharifah Amani in the leading role, tells the story of two Malay sisters, Rohana and Rohani, who run away from their wealthy abusive father. Yasmin died of a stroke in July last year. Participants from 13 Asia-Pacific countries, showcasing 32 feature films, 14 short films and two documentaries, took part in the festival, which was organised by Federation of Motion Pictures Producers in Asia-Pacific>.
